The Village Hall’s quilters group has received national recognition for their recent contribution to the 70273 project. The group has had an article published in a national quilting magazine. ‘The Quilter’ have reported on the groups recent exhibition at Durham Cathedral in February.
The exhibition took place on Holocaust memorial Day and featured blocks of fabric produced by the group as their contribution to the project. The international Project commemorates the 70,273 mentally or physically handicapped men. women and children murdered by the Nazis between January 1940 and August 1941.These people are being remembered by quilters in over 100 countries who are gathering 70,273 blocks each with two red crosses representing the crosses doctors made in ‘assessing’ the victims. If an individual were given to crosses they were murdered, usually within 1 to 2 hours. The blocks are stitched together into quilts and are travelling the world. The quilts are due to be on display again at the Cathedral in 2018.
